Cloey (Candy) Ann Lopez was born on June 17, 1948 in Sidney, Nebraska to Frank and Esther Hanks. She was adopted as a young girl by her mother's second husband, Harold Kulhanek, Jr. She grew up in Fairbury, Nebraska and graduated from Fairbury High School in 1966. She met her lifelong best friend, Paren (Renee) Sims, when she was 8 years old. Their loving friendship lasted more than 6 decades. Cloey had a passion for nursing and earned her LPN license in 1981 and her RN license in 1992. She was a firm believer in higher education and on the importance of women being self sufficient. She encouraged her daughter and bonus daughters to persue their college education and was beyond proud that all three went on to Master's Degree Programs.
Cloey is survived by her Daughter, Tara Caye Hernandez of Lincoln, Nebraska; Bonus Daughter, DeeAnn Briceno-Roybal and husband Melvin Roybal of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Bonus Daughter, Lurri Schoenrock and husband Brad Schoenrock of Fairbury, Nebraska; Sister, Joyce James-Wood and husband Donnie Wood of Omaha, Nebraska; Sister, Billie Mohr of Fairbury, Nebraska; Brother, Kevin Kulhanek and wife Susan Kulhanek of Koontze, Texas; and Father, Harold Kulhanek, Jr. of Fairbury, Nebraska. Additionally, Cloey birthed a biological child in 1968, who was raised outside the family system.
Cloey is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 2 bonus grandchildren; Crystal Hernandez-Perez and wife Ashley Perez; Michael Briceno and wife Miquella Goke-Briceno, Taraen Hernandez-Taylor, Kristine Briceno-Roybal, Stefnee Briceno-Roybal, Leslee Briceno-Roybal, Kruz Schoenrock and wife Katie Schoenrock, and Brurria Baker and husband Brandon Baker. Cloey also has 4 great grandchildren and 5 bonus great grandchildren; Felix, Xavier, Shi, Khaliah, Kain, Braegan, Kinley, Harper, and Kella. Her first great, great grandchild, Zayden, was born 12 days after her death. While Cloey certainly loved and cherished all of her grandchildren, it's no secret that her Granddog, Arya was her absolute favorite. Cloey and Arya shared an unbreakable bond and Cloey lavished her with treats and toys. Cloey also leaves 7 nephews, 12 great nephews, 4 great nieces, 5 great, great nephews, 1 great, great niece, and numerous other friends and family members to cherish her memory.
Cloey is rejoicing in Heaven with her loved ones that passed away before her including: Grandmother, Effie Eden; Mother, Esther Kulhanek; Infant Brother, Harold Kulhanek III; Nephew, Kolby Kulhanek; Bonus Grandson, Colton Schoenrock; Soulmate, Calvin Hudson; Daughter-in-law, Angelita Chavez; Brother-in-law, Gary Mohr; Cousin, Larry Joe Troxel; and Princess, Olivia Rose Franco. She was also greeted by beloved furbabies: Bandit, Bella, Tessa Mae, Pepper, Bailey, and Clifford.
Cloey was a quiet and humble Christian and she chose Saint Martin De Porres as the Patron Saint for herself and her family. Cloey believed in active Christianity and often said, "If you have to tell people that you're a Christian, you ain't doing it right. People should see it in your smile and feel it through your kindness and compassion." She was friendly and never met a stranger; she always had a kind word and willing smile for those that needed it. Despite having limited means, she gave freely and generously to others. Her personal motto was, "Be brave and kind."
Cloey will forever be remembered and is sadly missed. Her memorial service and burial will be held on April 22, 2021. There will be a luncheon in her honor following the service.
