Jay E Schmidt

April 23, 1933 ~ March 19, 2020 (age 86)

Obituary

Jay Schmidt, 86, of Lincoln passed away Thursday, March 19, 2020. He was born April 23, 1933 to Sigfried and Calista (Dougherty) Schmidt on a farm near Davey, Nebraska. The family eventually moved to Waverly, Nebraska where he graduated from high school. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and from Drew University School of Theology in Madison, N.J. While at the University of Nebraska for a year he served the Methodist Church at Palmyra. At Drew he met Barbara Powell and they were married at Drew University Chapel in 1956. For his student internship he served St. Paul Methodist Church at Irvington, New York.  He served United Methodist Churches in Nebraska at St. Paul, Walthill, Rosalie, Gretna, Hebron, Fairmont, Calvary in Fremont, Hooper, Lakeview, Roca, Ceresco, Valparaiso, Raymond, and Silver Creek. He served as interim pastor at Newman Church in Lincoln.  He also served the United Church of Christ at Belvidere and Grafton. He served on the staff of the United Methodist Community Center in Omaha.

He served on various church and community boards as well as the board of Nebraskans for Peace, the Community Advisory Board of KZUM community radio and the Citizens Climate Lobby. He was most pleased to have been the only representative from his county to the first meeting to implement President Kennedy’s mental health program that eventually became regional community clinics.  Jay wrote many letters on climate, justice and peace issues to political officials as well as letters to the editor and op-eds in newspapers.

Jay would tell you that one of the greatest things about his life was all the neat people he met; they made life fun as did the coffee shops, the music they offered, his wood carving and studies. The opportunity to work with others on things that mattered was a privilege.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Helen Ehrlich, Georgia Stevens and his brother, Keith.  He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Lincoln, daughter and son-in-law Rachel and Jim Garver of Lincoln, son Philip of Davey, son and daughter-in-law Michael and Brenda of Nevada, Missouri, and grandsons, Nicholas Deliyannis and his fiancée, Melissa Butts of Lincoln, Andrew Schmidt of Savannah, Georgia, Jarod and Tyler Schmidt of Nevada, Missouri.
